Are Energy Companies really on our side?

I'm still trying to figure this one out. My electric bill for March - April was $210.00. I have a big house and we're trying but not quite there on turning things off when we're not using them. During the month of April - May I used my dryer once or twice. I was really diligent about it because I wanted to see what a drop it would make in my electric bill. The time came when my meter was supposed to be read and I checked my on-line statement for a few days, with my excitement almost bursting from my line-dried seams. Then it was there....my bill... $40.00 more than the previous month. WHAT? There was an additional $20.00 in the electric companies portion as well as an additional $20.00 in the supplier portion. When I e-mailed them to see if it was an actual read or if they had any idea of why it was so high they gave me the standard response telling me where I can go to calculate how much energy my appliances take. Ummm - that's where I found out it costs me $2.25 every time I run the dryer. Really makes me wonder if they are really on the side of the environment or just pretending to be so we conserve and their bills don't really decrease much....or go up....

They don't read your meter any more. They "estimate."

They are ripping people off left and right.

Hi! I am new to your blog and have really enjoyed reading.
Do you know if you can ask for your meter to be read for accuracy? If it were to gain them more money, I am certain that they would be interested in someone coming out and reading it.

Anajz, in our case, it would NOT make them more money. Like other people, we are reducing our energy use. The power companies know this, which--I feel--is why they "estimate." They know they would lose money if they actually did readings.

My BF has been taking photos of our meter, and we are going to be contacting our county Consumer Protection office.

(Color me cynical.)

Hello cyber_hippie...I hope you are successful in your efforts to have your meter problem corrected! That sounds really FISHY to me. I keep a close watch on my electricity usage. Per CT Light & Power, they do read the meters and that is true as far as I can tell. Since I have an electric meter, they read it with a computer. I noticed right away that my usage went down considerably when I stopped using my dryer. I check my meter reading and compare it to what they show online. You can see your reading on the CT Light & Power web site. I don't know if it is the same where you live though. Yes, there is a possibility they could just change my meter using a computer since it's electric but I don't believe they're doing that since my bill reflects my reduced usage. Anyway...again, I do know that there are unscrupulous companies. The Bible says to be as wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove. You should watch closely to make sure that company isn't stealing from you. You do have the right to protect yourself from fraud. That is, being harmless doesn't mean you have to hand over your money to a thief. Best regards, Mrs. King

Thanks, Mrs.King. I will see if we can read ours online. That would make it easy for us to determine whether they are getting an accurate reading.

I don't know why I never thought of that!
